The Ugandan government has been criticised on several grounds for its abstinence-only policies on sexuality education directed towards young people. These grounds include the failure to recognise the multiple realities faced by young people, some of whom may already be sexually active. In the study reported on this paper, students' perceptions of relationships and sexual practices were analysed to obtain an understanding of how young people construct and negotiate their sexual agency in the context of abstinence-only messages provided in Ugandan secondary schools and at the wider community level. Ten in-depth interviews and six focus group discussions were conducted with students aged 15-19 years (N = 55) at an urban co-educational secondary school. Data were transcribed verbatim and analysed using grounded theory. Findings show that students engage in sexual activity despite their belief that contraception is ineffective and their fears for the consequences. Students' age, gender, financial capital and perceived sexual desire further increase risk and vulnerability. To improve their effectiveness, school-based sexuality education programmes should support students to challenge and negotiate structural factors such as gender roles and sociocultural norms that influence sexual practices and increase vulnerability and risk.

Sexually transmited diseases (STDs) can be transmited through genital-genital, orogenital, or anogenital contacts and remain to be a public health concern worldwide. Approximately one million people around the world are believed to be newly infected with sexually transmited infections (STIs) each day. Numerous causative agents including bacteria, viruses, protozoa, yeast, and fungi are responsible for STIs; however, viruses exhibit more serious risks, probabilities and outcomes of STDs than other organisms. The most lethal viral STIs are human immunodeiciency virus-1 (HIV), herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), and human papillomavirus (HPV), which are responsible for major sexually transmited viral infections including AIDS, herpes simplex, and genital warts, respectively. Despite the fact that several prevention strategies such as vaccination, abstinence from sex, limiting sex partners, the use of condoms and a range of therapeutic drugs have drastically reduced the risk of contracting STIs, these three infections continue to spread at an alarming rate. The high incidence and lack of efective vaccine, instigated scientists to look for alternate, cheap, and eicient strategies for controlling these deadly viruses. Microbicide are relatively new approach that may be helpful in preventing STIs transmission when applied inside the genitals before intercourse. Like other interventions, microbicides are used as prophylactic measures against STIs. Therefore, an excellent safety and eicacy proile analysis is mandatory before their approval for human use. Although no safe and eicacious microbicide is yet available, many candidates including nonoxynol-9, Savvy, cellulose sulfate, Carraguard, VivaGel, tenofovir gel, and PRO 2000 have shown promising in vitro activity and many more are under development. However, very few of them have moved to large-scale phase III trials. This chapter aims to provide a brief overview of various microbicides along with their mechanism of actions and recent updates on safety and efectiveness trials.

Περίληψη Η σεξουαλικότητα αποτελεί βασική πτυχή της ανθρώπινης ύπαρξης και η σεξουαλική αγωγή είναι ανθρώπινο δικαίωμα το οποίο οι περισσότερες χώρες του κόσμου έχουν αναγνωρίσει. Στόχος της παρούσας μελέτης είναι να διερευνήσει τα υπάρχοντα προγράμματα σεξουαλικής αγωγής ανά τον κόσμο με έμφαση στις ευρωπαϊκές χώρες. Όσον αφορά τη μεθοδολογία, η μελέτη πραγματοποιήθηκε μέσω ηλεκτρονικής αναζήτησης σε βάσεις δεδομένων των σύγχρονων προγραμμάτων σεξουαλικής αγωγής ανά τον κόσμο. Οι μελέτες που συμπεριλήφθηκαν στην ανασκόπηση όφειλαν, μεταξύ άλλων, να παρέχουν επαρκή δεδομένα προς παρουσίαση για δύο σημαντικούς παράγοντες, αυτούς της ηλικίας των παιδιών στα οποία παρέχεται η αγωγή και του περιεχομένου αυτής. Όσον αφορά την Ευρώπη, παρουσιάζονται τα προγράμματα στην Ελλάδα, την Κύπρο, την Ολλανδία, την Αγγλία, τη Γερμανία, την Ιταλία και την Φινλανδία. Όσον αφορά τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο, αναλύονται τα προγράμματα στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες της Αμερικής, στην περιοχή της Ασίας-Ειρηνικού, στην Αφρική, τη Λατινική Αμερική και την Αυστραλία. Σύμφωνα με τα αποτελέσματα της μελέτης, οι χώρες που εφαρμόζουν πολύπλευρα προγράμματα αγωγής, σταθερά στον χρόνο, με σύγχρονη μεθοδολογία και περιλαμβάνουν επίκαιρα ζητήματα προς ανάλυση επιδεικνύουν καλύτερα αποτελέσματα στην προσπάθειά τους τους να εκπαιδεύσουν τους νέους. Επιπλέον, η σεξουαλική αγωγή η οποία έχει στο επίκεντρό της την προσωπική ανάπτυξη και έχει ως αρχή την αντιμετώπιση της σεξουαλικότητας κατά την εφηβεία ως ευκαιρία για προσωπική εξέλιξη και όχι ως απειλή, είναι αποτελεσματικότερη. Τέλος, κρίνεται σκόπιμο τα μελλοντικά σχετικά προγράμματα να αξιολογούνται σε τακτά χρονικά διαστήματα, να λαμβάνουν υπόψη το αναπτυξιακό στάδιο των παιδιών και το εκάστοτε πολιτιστικό και κοινωνικό τους περιβάλλον. AbstractSexuality is a core issue for the human and sexual education is a human right which more of the countries have recognized. This study aimed to investigate the current sexual education programs in the world, with emphasis on the European countries. As far as the methodology is concerned, we used electronical research methods for detecting the currently applied sexual education programs in the world. The studies that were included had to, between other limits, provide evidence for the age range that the programs are applied and for the content as well. As far as Europe is concerned, the programs that are presented are the ones of Greece, Cyprus, Netherlands, England, Germany, Italy and Finland. As
