Absorption measurements of upper-atmospheric sodium at Boca Raton, Florida, 1967-1971

Abstract: Upper‐atmospheric sodium abundances have been measured at Boca Raton, Florida (26.4°N, 80.1°W), from 1967 to 1971. These daytime spectroscopic absorption measurements were made with the Pepsios spectrometer using sunlight, and each line profile was computer‐fitted to yield the abundance and analysis uncertainty. Results are consistent with existing twilight glow measurements and do not show the daytime enhancement reported for dayglow measurements. No diurnal variations are apparent. Short‐term fluctuations ar… Show more

“…The day to twilight ratios over a period of 5 years reported by Blamont and Donahue [1964] presented extreme values of 7 in June and 2 in December. The only measurements inconsistent with these results were the absorption data obtained by McNutt and Mack [1963] and by Burnett et al [1972], which did not show any evidence of a diurnal variation. More recently, sodium soundings by laser showed no systematic difference in night, twilight, and daytime abundances [Gibson and Sandford, 1972].…”

“…Purdy, 1970; Albano et al, 1970]. Likewise, the direct absorption results obtained by Burnett et al [1972], as well as the laser data obtained by Gibson and Sandford [1972], showed little or no diurnal variation. However, the direct absorption.…”

“…The existence of atomic sodium in the Earth's atmosphere has been known for over 40 years [Chapman, 1939]. The results of subsequent ground-based and air-borne experiments indicate that atmospheric sodium is located at about 90-km altitude in the form of a layer approximately 15 km thick [Gault and Rundle, 1969 Burnett et al, 1972;Partowmah, 1975;Gibson and Sanford, 1972]. Another pronounced character of the atomic sodium abundances is the rapid variability during the day.…”
