“…The industrial solvent dimethylsulphox ide (DMSO) was found to be therapeutically beneficial when applied to skin as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent by re ducing the swelling and pain of sprains and arthritis [4], Subsequently, it has been shown to readily penetrate skin [6] and to facilitate transport of other drugs through skin for absorption in the blood [5]. DMSO also acts as a diuretic and possesses antibacterial [11], antiviral [10], cryptoprotective [12] and antisclerotic properties [2].…”

“…A wide range of primary pharmacological actions of DMSO has been documented in laboratory studies: membrane transport, effects on connective tissue, anti-inflammatory effect, nerve blockade (analgesia), bacteriostasis, diuresis, enhancements or reduction of the effectiveness of other drugs, cholinesterase inhibition, nonspecific enhancement of resistance to infection, vasodilatation, muscle relaxation, antagonism to platelet aggregation, and influence on serum cholesterol in experimental hypercholesterolemia, a scavenger of the free radicals that gather at the site of injury (http://www.dmso.org). Especially, it is interesting that DMSO readily crosses most tissue membranes of lower animals and man [40]. On the basis of our in vitro experimental data, it could be reasonable to investigate DMSO as a carrier of the tungsten compounds as antidiabetic drugs in vivo.…”

“…The first quality that struck Dr. Jacob about the DMSO drug was its ability to pass through membranes, an ability that has been verified by numerous subsequent researchers [1]. DMSO perhaps has been used most widely as a topical analgesic, in a 70 percent DMSO, 30 percent water solution.…”
