Absorption Activity of Materials Based on Fibrous Acrylonitrile and 2-Acrylamido-2-Methylpropanesulfonic Acid Copolymers

ShcherbinaThe absorption of zinc ions by ion-exchangers based on acrylonitrile (AN) and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) as the ionizable component was studied. It was found that the amount of zinc absorbed by these materials could exceed the SEC of the sulfonates. It was proposed that ion exchangers based on poly(AN-co-AMPS) could bind zinc ions through non-ionic interactions.One of the principal problems for modern industry is protection of the environment from ecologically hazardous releases. Effective purification methods, in particular, the use of ion-exchange technologies, must be developed in order to solve it. New chemisorption materials, including fibrous ion exchangers, are also necessary in order to develop processes that produce little waste. Fibrous structures have an active specific surface area that is more than an order of magnitude greater than that of granules and 3-4 times greater than that of powders [1].Fibrous ion exchangers are characterized by high mechanical and osmotic stability, low hydrodynamic resistance, and rapid ion-exchange processes [2][3][4]. Another advantage of fibrous sorbents is the ability to use them as cloth, noncloth fabrics, yarns, and pellets [5,6].Research at the Department of Chemical Engineering of High-Molecular-Weight Compounds of Mogilev State University of Food Products showed that ion exchangers based on copolymers of acrylonitrile (AN) and ionizable 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) can exhibit high absorption activity: C H 2A series of experiments was carried out in order to quantify the absorption activity of such ion exchangers. The properties of poly(AN-co-AMPS) materials containing from 1 to 24 mass% AMPS were studied. Herein we present results for the absorption of zinc ions (Zn 2+ ) by such materials.Copolymers of AN and AMPS were synthesized in a reactor with continuous ideal mixing. The resulting spinning solution was purified of monomer, de-aerated, and used for wet spinning of fiber with linear density 0.33 tex. Granulated ion-exchangers were prepared from the same spinning solution. The diameter of the air-dried granules was 2-3 mm. A peculiarity of poly(AN-co-AMPS) ion exchangers containing >15% AMPS was their ability for multiple reversible conversions from the air-dried to the gel state.Gel-like ion exchangers were converted to the H + -form by treatment with HCl solution (1 N).
