Absolute transverse mobility and ratchet effect on periodic two-dimensional symmetric substrates

Abstract: We present a simple model of an overdamped particle moving on a two dimensional symmetric periodic substrate with a dc drive in the longitudinal direction and additional ac drives in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. For certain regimes we find that a finite longitudinal dc force produces a net dc response only in the transverse direction, which we term absolute transverse mobility. Additionally we find regimes exhibiting a ratchet effect in the absence of an applied dc drive.

“…In the present work, the substrate is flat except for the L-shaped barriers, and the particles experience only contact interactions with the barriers. In the eggcarton system under a circular ac drive, a transverse dc motion occurs only if an additional longitudinal dc drift is applied to the particles 2 ; if a noncircular ac drive is applied that produces a particle orbit with broken spatial symmetry, then dc rectification can occur even without a dc drift drive 3,5,6 . In the present work, the ac driving orbits are symmetric, and the barrier lattice introduces the asymmetry required for rectification to occur.…”

“…When the particles interact with each other as well as the substrate, the ratchet effect can exhibit reversals where the particles move with the substrate asymmetry in some regimes, and against it in others 1 . It is also possible to create ratchet effects for particles moving over two dimensional (2D) symmetric substrates by driving the particles with two different ac drives that sum together to create an asymmetric pattern of particle motion [2][3][4][5][6] . Directed motion on periodic substrates has been demonstrated experimentally for colloidal particles driven over magnetic substrates 7,8 .…”

“…These phase locking steps are distinct from Shapiro steps, and their widths grow quadratically with increasing ac amplitude rather than showing the oscillatory behavior associated with Shapiro steps. Phase locking effects can also occur for overdamped particle motion in 2D periodic systems under combinations of two perpendicular ac drives, producing localized and delocalized motion as well as rectification effects [30][31][32][33][34][35] .…”

“…We have also considered the cases A = B and ω A = ω B , as well as the addition of a phase offset and driving with more complicated ac forms. These introduce a considerable number of new behaviors not found for the strictly circular case, and have been detailed in a separate publication [29].…”
