Absolute size and proportionality characteristics of World Championship female basketball players

Abstract: In total, 168 players from 14 national teams were measured using 38 anthropometric dimensions before the Women's World Basketball Championships held in Australia in 1994. Measures of segment length, breadth and girth were recorded by a team of trained anthropometrists using standard protocols. The subjects were divided according to playing position and team performance so that univariate analyses of variance could be administered using absolute size and proportionality data as dependent variables. Clear differ… Show more

“…Most recent studies focus exclusively on variation in standard body size measurements and their association with 'positions' within an athletic team (a center in basketball, for example) or success at particular sports (Ackland et al, 1997;Torres-Unda et al, 2013) without discussion of relative proportions or allometric variation and their potential eff ects on overall athletic success. Many of these studies have also been hindered by small sample sizes.…”

“…Sixteen different basketball court zones were established (Hughes & Franks, 2004), namely zone A, B, C, D, E, F, G and zone O in the defensive half and zone I, J, K, L, M, N, H and zone P in the offensive half of the playing court (Figure 1). The players' positions on court were defined as guards, forwards or centres (Ackland, Schreiner, & Kerr, 1997;Carter, Ackland, Kerr, & Stappf, 2005;Trninić, Dizdar, & Dežman, 2000).…”
