Absolute photoionization cross sections of the Ba ground state in the autoionization region: I. 238 - 218 nm

Abstract: Absolute photoionization cross sections for Ba, measured using a Mach-Zender interferometer, are presented. The present value of the cross section at the ionization threshold, 48.8 ± 6.7 Mb, is in good agreement with previous values. R-matrix calculations combined with MQDT techniques have been carried out to analyse the spectra obtained. The lineshape parameters obtained from the experimental data on the resonance lines are used to establish the identity of perturbing structure: the perturber is identified as… Show more

“…Recently, we measured the absolute photoionization cross sections in the autoionization region of 238-218 nm and compared the results with eigenchannel R-matrix calculations combined with multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT) (Maeda et al 1997; hereafter referred to as paper I). Analysing the lineshapes of the experimental data we found that the 5d( 2 D 3/2 )np[ 1 2 ] series is much more perturbed than the other series.…”

“…In the corresponding transmission dependencies, the interference effect leads to either perfect transmission or perfect reflection, producing a sharp asymmetric response. This kind of the wave resonance is also common in different interferometer devices such as the Aharonov-Bohm interferometer [15] and the Mach-Zehnder interferometer [16].…”

“…70 One expects that the interaction giving rise to the structure in the photoionization spectrum will be affected by the presence of helium since the ionization threshold is lowered by the helium while Rydberg states having low principal quantum numbers are shifted up in energy. However, it is unclear how exactly this will modify the photoionization spectrum.…”
