“…Considering that there is no considerable diachronism between these two lithostratigraphical units, the Irati Formation should be regarded as older than 270 My. This dating disagrees with those established by Melchor (2000) and Matos et al (2001) that come from stratigraphically lower sections.…”

“…Matos et al (2001) An absolute age of 270 My was obtained from tuff beds of the Collingham Formation, in Namibia (Stollhofen et al 2000). This unit overlies the Whitehill Formation, which is correlated to the Irati Formation (Faure and Cole 1999), in Paraná Basin, and is related to the Lueckisporites virkkiae Interval Zone.…”

“…Therefore, it is important to highlight the evidence of volcanic activity recorded for the south Brazilian coal-bearing strata, mainly in the Candiota and Faxinal coalfields (Formoso et al, 1999;Matos et al, 2001;Cazzulo-Klepzig et al, 2005;Guerra-Sommer et al, 2008a,b,c;Simas, 2008;Simas et al, 2009). The volcanic rocks, identified as tonsteins, are represented by discrete and continuous horizons of clay beds interbedded within different coal seams.…”

“…The lithostratigraphic section (of upper Gondwana I Supersequence) is modified from Zalán et al (1991). The absolute dating in Interpretation I is taken from Coutinho and Hachiro (2005;R 1 ) and Matos et al (2001;R 2 ); the Teresina Formation may be Middle-Late Permian in age. Interpretation II: the absolute dating is taken from Santos et al (2006;R 3 ) and the lithostratigraphic chart is schematized from Souza (2006); the Teresina Formation may be latest Early Permian or Middle Permian in age.…”

“…Until recently, there was only one absolute U/Pb age available-for the Tubarão Group of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, which is 267.1 AE 3.4 Ma (Guadalupian) from a tonstein interbedded in a coal seam (see Matos et al 2001) of the Rio Bonito Formation (Figure 3; R 2 ), and this fact rendered the overlying formations Guadalupian or younger in age (Middle Permian according to Wardlaw et al [2004, p. 254; see also Souza and Marques-Toigo 2005). Coutinho and Hachiro (2005) suggested a Late Permian age for the Passa Dois Group on the basis of the above mentioned date for the Rio Bonito Formation and their radiometric dating of the Iratí Formation (unpublished data in Figure 3: Interpretation I, R 1 -but only an approximate age is given).…”
