Absence of the mental foramen in dry human mandibles

Abstract: The absence of the mental foramen was investigated in 1,435 dry human mandibles (2,870 sides). The foramen was absent twice in the right side (0.06%) and once in the left side (0.03%). The meaning of this anatomical variation was commented.

“…Mental vein drains into facial vein and finally into pterygoid venous plexus [1]. Morphological variations of the mental foramen are ranging from difference in shape, direction of opening, location to presence of accessory foramen also complete absence of the foramen in some rare cases [2][3][4][5]. The recent advances in dentistry increasing the frequency of orthognathic surgeries for various treatments and cosmetic purposes and also the replacement of missing teeth by dental implants have brought the clinical importance to the morphology and morphometry of the mental foramen.…”

“…Variations of mental foramens are often encountered ranging from difference in shape and positions [5,6,7] to the presence of accessory foramen [8], or complete absence as mentioned in some cases [9,10]. The mental nerve and vessels radiate through the mental foramen and supply sensory innervation and blood supply to the soft tissues of the chin, lower lip and gingival on the ipsilateral side of the mandible.…”

“…et al [11]. The position of mental foramen has been studied by means of direct measurement on dry mandibles or by using radiographs of dry mandibles or in patients [12][13][14]. Standard anatomical [15] and radiological text books [16] contain conflicting statements regarding the location of mental foramen.…”
