“…This is despite the fact that an increased risk of NMRD has been observed in highly exposed New York talc miners and millers. The lack of mesothelioma risk in New York talc miners and millers is consistent with what has been observed in other talc miner and miller cohorts (Finley et al, 2017; Fordyce et al, 2019; Ierardi and Marsh 2020; Pira et al, 2017; Wergeland et al, 2017), as well as other cohorts exposed to amphibole cleavage fragments (Gamble and Gibbs 2008; Garabrant and Pastula 2018).…”

“…Ierardi and Marsh ( 58 ) conducted a power analysis to determine whether the pooled cohorts could detect a true association between talc exposure and mesothelioma risk among talc miners and millers, if there were one. Based on 130,154 total person-years of follow-up across five cohorts, the authors estimated that the pooled cohorts ( 30 , 51 , 53 , 56 ) had 59% and 78% power to detect a 2.5-fold or greater and a 3.0-fold or greater increased risk of mesothelioma, respectively.…”

“…For context, occupational epidemiology studies of highly exposed cosmetic talc miners and millers from Austria, France, Italy, Norway, and the U.S. (state of Vermont) demonstrated that these workers were not at an increased risk of mesothelioma (Finley et al, 2017; Garabrant and Pastula, 2018; Ierardi and Marsh, 2020; Ierardi et al, 2022; Marsh et al, 2019; Marsh and Ierardi, 2020). Zero cases of mesothelioma have been reported in all these cohorts except for the Vermont cosmetic talc miners and millers.…”
