“…These recombinants can be detected in the preleukemic period (Sankar-Mistry and Jolicoeur, 1980), are frequently isolated from lymphoma cells serially passaged in vitro and in vivo, but are paradoxically seldom recovered from the primary tumors (Ihle et al, 1976;Lieberman et al, 1976Lieberman et al, , 1977Lieberman et al, , 1979Sankar-Mistry and Jolicoeur et al, 1980). Furthermore, radiation-induced TL were obtained in CBA mice which do not express endogenous retroviruses, and also, in several instances, the development of radioleukemia did not correlate (positively or negatively) with derepression of endogenous MuLV (Holmes et al, 1981;Mayer and Dorsch-Hasler, 1982). These conflicting data urged for a revision of the originally proposed mechanism: radiation-activation of endogenous viruses resulting in the production of leukemo-genic recombinants and finally in leukemia induction.…”
