Abrasion resistance of lamellar graphite iron: Interaction between microstructure and abrasive particles

Abstract: This study focuses on abrasion resistance of Lamellar Graphite Iron (LGI) using microscratch test under constant and progressive load conditions. The interactions between a semi-spherical abrasive particle, cast iron matrix and graphite lamellas were physically simulated using a sphero-conical indenter. The produced scratches were analysed using LOM and SEM to scrutinise the effect of normal load on resulting scratch depth, width, frictional force, friction coefficient and deformation mechanism of matrix durin… Show more

“…In other fields, influences of different factors on the performance can be well obtained in numerical simulation by considering the influence of clearance. 24 So only the second stage of the entire abrasion is studied. 21,22 After analyses and measures of all three stages, the result of parts' abrasion can be more accurate.…”

“…Abrasion of the step only takes place in the first two stages, and the actual contact area in the first stage is close to the second stage owing to the machining accuracy. 24 So only the second stage of the entire abrasion is studied.…”

“…However, in the literature, there are many converse effects on its mechanical properties, such as Young's modulus and hardness [5,9,10]. Nevertheless, graphite's influence on the matrix deformation and wear mode of cast iron has been the subject of many recent experimental studies [2,[11][12][13].…”

“…Recently, several experimental techniques have been used to examine the macroscopic abrasion of grey cast iron [18,19]. Other investigations of their microscopic abrasion wear via microindentation and microscratching have been performed [11][12][13], in addition to nanoscratch tests [20]. In most of these experimental studies, the tribological behavior of the cast iron is discussed based on the test conditions and the addition of different chemical elements on the iron's microstructure.…”
