Autism spectrum disorder is a behavioral developmental disorder affecting communication and social interaction due to its characteristics of cognitive deficit, difficulty in making eye contact, repetitive and restricted movements. The objective of this paper is to report a clinical case of dental care in a child with autism spectrum disorder using behavioral and pharmacological management techniques. A 12-year-old Caucasian male patient diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder attended the Nilton Lins University Special Needs Dental Clinic accompanied by a caregiver who reported not being able to get dental care elsewhere for a child. In the first visit, only anamnesis was done, as there was no patient cooperation, therefore, the drug hixizine 2mg/ml was prescribed one hour before the next visit. In the following consultation, the patient was sleepy due to the drug, management techniques were used, favoring follow-up during care. On clinical examination, root debris and class of caries were observed in most teeth present in the mouth. Complement the patient's behavior and elaborate a treatment plan with dental extractions and restorations divided into in order to establish a routine. Five consultations were held, however the caregiver gave up the treatment and it was not possible to complete it. As behavioral conditioning methods, techniques of positive reinforcement, reward, say-show-do and the drug hixizine are used, with no need for physical or mechanical restraint. Therefore, the management and the triggering drug are effective for the care of the determined patient, obtaining success in the procedures performed.
