Abnormalities of the paranasal sinuses in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma: a computed tomographic study

Abstract: A retrospective study of computed tomography scans of the paranasal sinuses of 131 control subjects in Hong Kong revealed minor mucosal abnormalities in more than half of the ethmoid sinuses. Major abnormalities were present in seven per cent of maxillary, five per cent of anterior ethmoid and four per cent of posterior ethmoid sinus. In 85 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma the prevalence of minor mucosal abnormalities in the sinuses was similar to that of the control group but major mucosal abnormalities… Show more

“…This data may be extrapolated and applied to the multimodality treatment employed for sinonasal cancer. Imaging studies performed for disease monitoring before and after treatment of NPC have shown an increase in sinonasal disease after completion of treatment . In one study, mucosal thickening observed with MRI in the paranasal sinuses of patients treated for NPC worsened in two‐thirds of patients after completion of radiation therapy .…”

“…On the follow‐up MRIs, sinus mucosal diseases (SMDs) are found not uncommonly. In the literature, there were few papers concerning the incidence and progression of radiation‐induced SMDs in NPC patients 9–14 . The necessity of antibiotic treatment or the determination of conditions in which surgery should be performed for these SMDs is controversial.…”

“…The percentage of patients with incidental findings in paranasal sinuses varied between 26.7% and 60.5% in studies that used CBCT ( 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ). This prevalence varied from 24.7% to 64.8% in studies that employed different diagnostic techniques, such as CT or magnetic resonance imaging ( 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ). In the present study, the percentage of paranasal sinus pathoses was 88.4%, which is greater than that reported in the above-mentioned studies.…”
