Abnormal white matter integrity as a structural endophenotype for bipolar disorder

Abstract: Decreased FA in the fornix, left posterior thalamic radiation and left sagittal stratum in both bipolar patients and unaffected siblings may represent a potential structural endophenotype or a trait-based marker for BD.

“…Interestingly, our results indicated significant differences in the FA values in the UF in female patients with BD aged 26–45 years, suggesting that the structural integrity of this neural circuit is impaired in female patients with BD during adulthood. This is consistent with the results of previous structural studies that included both adult men and women and reported significantly decreased FA in BD patients during adulthood compared with the control group [ 9 , 34 , 36 , 37 , 55 ]. In contrast, other studies have shown that adult patients with BD exhibit significantly increased FA compared with healthy controls in the left UF [ 32 , 33 ].…”

“…As detected by brain MRI ( fig.2 ), our patient's lesions were located in the left temporal and parietal lobes, which may account for her obvious auditory hallucinations in the early stage. It has been proven that cortical and subcortical white matter lesions gave rise to psychiatric symptoms by impeding the white matter pathways and interfering with equilibrium of neurotransmitter adjustment [35] , [36] , [37] , [38] . Moreover, whether hypothyroidism gave rise to the psychiatric symptoms is uncertain [39] , [40] .…”

“…Many studies have attempted to identify trait and state markers of a range of psychiatric disorders, including anorexia nervosa (AN), 912 depression, 13 bipolar disorder, 14 and schizophrenia. 15 A trait marker of a disorder is typically conceptualized in these studies as a characteristic that distinguishes an individual with a disorder from healthy controls, is present before and predicts disorder onset, persists following total or partial remission, and is present in individuals with subclinical profiles.…”
