Abnormal Uterine Bleeding- evaluation by Endometrial Aspiration

Abstract: Endometrial evaluation is generally indicated in cases presenting with abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB), especially in women more than 35 years of age. AUB encompasses a variety of presentation, for example, heavy menstrual bleeding, frequent bleeding, irregular vaginal bleeding, postcoital and postmenopausal bleeding to name a few. Many methods are used for the evaluation of such cases, with most common being sonography and endometrial biopsy with very few cases requiring more invasive approach like hysterosco… Show more

“…Second most common feature was secretory phase endometrium in 50 cases (28.73%). Similar incidence was noted in other studies [4,10,11,12,13]. Proliferative endometrium were with the features such as tubular to slightly tortuous glands lined by pseudostratified tall columnar cells.…”

“…Most common hormonal imbalance pattern noted was disordered proliferative endometrium in 20 cases (11.49%), third most common pattern of all. Similar incidence was seen in the study conducted by Pratibha Singh [10] were 15.6% of cases showed disordered proliferative endometrium occupying the third position overall. Disordered proliferative endometrium has features similar to proliferative endometrium with glands lined by cytologically bland, pseudostratified, mitotically active epithelium with a normal gland stromal ratio.…”

“…3% of our Pipelle biopsy patients had carcinoma endometrium which is similar to the study by Singh P et al, (2.6%) conducted at AIIMS jodhpur. 11 Risk of endometrial cancer in women with postmenopausal bleeding is 10% (ICMR). In our study 5 out of 23 cases of PMB had carcinoma endometrium with an incidence of 21%.…”

“…1,8 Some studies suggest that endometrial sampling should be performed in women older than 35 years old with AUB. 5,9 However, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (SOGC) suggests that the procedure should be conducted in women aged over 40 years old or in cases whose bleeding does not respond to medical therapy, and also in younger women with risk factors for endometrial cancer. 8 The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends performing endometrial sampling in women aged over 45 years old or in younger women with some risk factors such as obesity, polycystic ovary syndrome, failed medical treatment, or persistent bleeding.…”
