Abnormal glucose tolerance is associated with diminished postload change in leptin levels in women

Abstract: Disturbed leptin changes were found following an OGTT in women with abnormal glucose tolerance that might be either a cause or a consequence of leptin resistance.

“…In the Brazilian study, higher leptin levels were positively correlated with insulin resistance (HOMA‐IR index) in children and adolescents (Gonzaga, Medeiros, de Carvalho, & Alves, ). In addition, the fasting leptin level is negatively associated with insulin sensitivity in women with a previous history of gestational diabetes mellitus (Madarász et al, ). Leptin also potentially exerts its function through an inflammatory pathway.…”

“…Hyperglycemia, an indicator for abnormal glucose homeostasis, is related to diabetes, incidences of obesity, and cardiovascular risk, inducing peripheral insulin resistance [45]. Recent studies indicate that hyperglycemia-induced diabetic complications are likely from oxidative dysfunction and inflammatory effect [5, 6].…”

“…In our earlier study, we emphasized, impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) as an additional risk factor to optimal immune function in obesity. Further, a recent study stated IGT as an independent risk factor for postload leptin changes, which lead us to speculate IGT to be either a cause or consequence of leptin resistance [34]. However, the mechanism needs to be fully elucidated.…”
