Abnormal Curtain Signs Identified With a Novel Lung Ultrasound Protocol in Six Dogs With Pneumothorax

Abstract: Pneumothorax is typically ruled out sonographically by detecting a glide sign, lung pulse, and/or B lines, and ruled in by detecting the return of a glide sign and/or presence of a lung point. This case series describes novel lung ultrasound findings (abnormal curtain signs) in dogs with naturally-occurring pneumothorax. This case series also describes a novel lung ultrasound protocol that involves evaluating the curtain sign along the entire thoracoabdominal border and evaluating the ventral pleural space wit… Show more

“…Placement of the probe both perpendicular and parallel to the ribs and inclusion of the pericardio‐diaphragmatic (PD) site to ensure scanning of the most dependent part of the thorax may have increased the chance of detection of small volume pleural effusions (Milliner & Tsung 2017, Boysen et al . 2019, 2020).…”

“… 37 A modification of this technique was used in the ventral thoracic regions. 38 This involves keeping the probe parallel to the ribs and sliding it ventrally and dorsally between the sternal muscles and ventral lung regions within each intercostal space. Abnormalities recorded at each region are described in Table 1 .…”

“…A LUS‐trained internal medicine resident, blinded to CXR findings, performed LUS using a portable ultrasound machine using a modification of a previously described protocol, where 3‐second video cineloops were recorded at 3 intercostal spaces (4th, 6th, and 8th) in the dorsal, middle, and ventral thirds of the thorax (9 regions in total per hemithorax) 37 . A modification of this technique was used in the ventral thoracic regions 38 . This involves keeping the probe parallel to the ribs and sliding it ventrally and dorsally between the sternal muscles and ventral lung regions within each intercostal space.…”
