Abnormal BMI in Male and/or Female Partners Are Deleterious for Embryonic Development and Pregnancy Outcome During ART Process: A Retrospective Study

Abstract: ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of BMI in male and/or female partners on embryo development and clinical pregnancy outcome during ART.MethodsData of 11,130 cycles between January 2018 and December 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. They were divided into Group A, B, C, and D based on couples’ BMI values, also were divided into Group I, II, III and IV in IVF cycles and Group i, ii, iii, and iv in ICSI cycles. After grouping, inter-group indicators comparisons and logistic regression analysis were performed.… Show more

“…However, Potdar et al 8 and Nastri et al 13 did not describe how type of endometrial injury or the length of time between endometrial injury and embryo transfer may influence blastocyst implantation. We believe that endometrial biopsy is the preferred approach because a biopsy helps identify certain microscopic endometrial causes of infertility, such as chronic endometritis (CE), which is a condition involving the breakdown of the peaceful coexistence between microorganisms and the host immune system in the endometrium 16,17 . Unfortunately, in most cases, CE produces no noticeable signs or only mild symptoms.…”

“…Therefore, this entity may be neglected by gynecologists and pathologists due to its mild clinical manifestations and the time-consuming microscopic examinations necessary for its diagnosis. Based on diagnostic criteria for CE, the prevalence of this condition is approximately 11.1% in the general population 18 , and it is highly prevalent among infertile women [14][15][16][17][18] .…”

“…They respond poorly to induction of ovulation, require higher doses of gonadotropins and longer treatment courses for follicular development and ovulatory cycles [40]. When focusing on their blastocyst quality, high BMI is not associated with low embryo quality, though implantation rate is reduced [41][42][43]. Type 2 diabetes is most frequently associated with obesity.…”

“…There are several studies that suggest that male BMI above the normal range may be related to a reduced rate of success following the use of ART like IVF and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) [ 12 , 224 , 225 ]. A study performed by Anifandis et al showed that the effect of paternal BMI on the quality of the embryo and outcome of IVF was greater than the parameters of semen analysis [ 226 ].…”
