ABM Clinical Protocol #9: Use of Galactogogues in Initiating or Augmenting the Rate of Maternal Milk Secretion (First Revision January 2011)

Abstract: A central goal of The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine is the development of clinical protocols for managing common medical problems that may impact breastfeeding success. These protocols serve only as guidelines for the care of breastfeeding mothers and infants and do not delineate an exclusive course of treatment or serve as standards of medical care. “…Similarly, domperidone and metoclopramide were ‘never’ or only ‘rarely’ recommended. Other surveys on galactagogues have reported largely similar findings to those described here 2325,29. “…Academic publications presented many cases of induced lactation experiments using galactagogues, a class of medications that initiate and/or increase milk production (8,(49)(50)(51)(52)(53)(54)(55)(56). In addition, there have been several studies conducted on induced lactation practices, such as examining the success of induced lactation in non-pregnant women (17); identifying the processes that promote milk production for women who want to induce lactation (8); exploring motivating factors or reasons for why women want to breastfeed their adopted children (5,48) and gathering experiences of induced lactation (57,58).…”
