“…While their service temperature is restricted by the low melting point of SiO2 (Tm=1650 °C) [8,9]. The ablation resistance of ZrC-SiC coating can be further improved by the addition of TaC since the generated Ta2O5 (Tm=1800 °C [10]) and Zr6Ta2O17 (Tm=1900 °C [11]) have higher melting point, as demonstrated by our previous study of ZrC-SiC/TaC coatings [12]. Yet, the high service temperature brings ablation heat accumulation and a large thermal stress gradient on the surface of the coatings, which will result in large local defects and accelerate the failure of the coating.…”

“…ZrC is a kind of UHTC materials with a high melting point of over 3500 ℃, low density (6.64 g•cm -3 ), good oxidation resistance, and high-temperature creep strength. Many studies have shown that ZrC has the ability to maintain high strength and form refractory ZrO 2 in high temperature environment [10]. Thus, it is a good choice to use ZrC as a surface coating material for Ta-based alloy.…”
