Abiotic and Biotic Links Work Two Ways: Effects on the Deposit at the Cliff Foot Induced by Mechanical Action of Date Mussel Harvesting (Lithophaga lithophaga)

Abstract: The existence of linkages between ecological and\ud geomorphological processes and the influence of human\ud activities both on the biota and on geomorphology is well\ud known for terrestrial environments, while it has been seldom\ud reported for submerged ones. A survey in the Noli-Bergeggi\ud area (NW Mediterranean Sea) has been carried out to test\ud the hypothesis that the harvesting of Lithophaga lithophaga\ud has an impact not only on the hammered rock, but also on\ud the sediments at the cliff foot. “…Moreover, geomorphic processes and landforms shape the distribution of biota, and conversely biota modify geomorphic processes and landforms (Stallins, 2006;Rovere et al, 2009a). Marine landforms are strictly related to the environment of formation and to the geological properties of the rock (e.g.…”

“…The presence of coastal defenses, such as groynes, jetties or harbors, has been digitized from orthophotos. Dates of mussel harvesting have been placed on the map according to bibliographical information (Parravicini et al, 2009;Parravicini et al, 2010;Rovere et al, 2008), while sewage pipes and other structures on the seafloor have been digitized from Regional datasets (www.ambienteinliguria.it). 8 Coastal occupation.…”

“…This gathering gives those definition about two sorts from claiming heritage, the place "…natural legacy will be characterized similarly as those complex about bio-ecological and geomorphological components of nature deserving about protection. This twofold point of view may be additionally recognized at authoritative level, notably Toward those first parts of the EU directive 92/43, and during experimental level Toward the endeavors will join geomorphology Furthermore nature [2,3]. Geo-heritage evaluation arised in the recent years with growing importance, leading to a place for geodiversity concepts alongside biodiversity [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11].…”
