Ability of fitness testing to predict injury risk during initial tactical training: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: ObjectiveTactical personnel (Military, Law Enforcement, Emergency Responders) require physical fitness levels sufficient for training and occupational duty. Physical conditioning aimed at increasing fitness levels during training presents an injury risk, but unfit trainees may struggle to meet occupational performance standards, further increasing injury risk to themselvesor others. Therefore, the aim of this review was to determine if fitness, asquantified by tactical fitness tests, effectively predicts injur… Show more

“…It is estimated that each year, more than 640,000 people die as a result of falls [ 1 ]. Falls are the second leading cause of non-fatal and fatal injuries among older adults [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Older adults with a high risk of falls are in the high-risk group for fall injury [ 5 ] and fall-related death [ 6 ].…”

“…However, the constant direction changes can prove stressful (14), and individuals that cannot keep pace could be ejected from the 20MSFT even if they have not reached their maximal aerobic capacity (20). Nonetheless, better performance in the 2.4-km run and 20MSFT has been linked to academy graduation in law enforcement recruits, which indicates the practical application of both tests (7,19,21). This led Lockie et al (13) to investigate the relationships between the 2.4-km run and 20MSFT in law enforcement recruits.…”

“…Abdominal endurance was correlated with PAT [ 40 ] and OPAT [ 39 ] performance while abdominal endurance and strength was found to be important for firefighters’ ability test performance [ 35 ]. The use of measures of muscular endurance, such as push-ups or sit-ups, may be more indicative of a global measure of fitness and are, therefore, questioned as relevant in fitness testing [ 51 ]. However, this is not to suggest that these measures are not of value, as poor holistic fitness can have second-order impacts on occupational fitness (e.g., increased workplace absenteeism due to illness) [ 52 ].…”
