“…Rosenberg and Baltimore (28) and Scher (32) noted that whereas any replication competent helper virus allowed A-MuLV transformation of 3T3 cells, leukemogenic helper virus was required for in vivo transformation. Hines and Gragowski (12) recently showed that the tumor cell type and the course of peripheral (nonthymic) A-MuLV disease are unaltered by the use of the regressor Friend helper virus. Thus, the leukemogenic helper dependence of A-MuLV transformation of normal cells may be transient.…”

“…is an acute transforming, replication-defective retrovirus that primarily induces non-thymic lymphomas of the pre-B cell phenotype (Abelson and Rabstein, 1970;Prekumar et al, 1975;Boss et al, 1979). A-MuLV has also been shown, however, to induce a variety of hemopoietic tumors including plasmacytomas (Potter et al, 19731, myelomonocytic leukemias (Rashke et al, 1978;Hines and Gragowski, 1983), T-cell lymphomas (Cook, 19821, and mastocytomas (Mendoza and Metzger, 1976;Risser et al, 1978). In addition, A-MuLV can transform both hemopoietic cells and fibroblasts in vitro (Ftosenberg et al, 1975;Scher and Siegler, 1975).…”

“…The origin and preliminary characterization of the cloned AC5, AC8, and C11 cell lines has been described (Hines, 1985). These cell lines were derived from a leukemic BALB/c mouse that had been infected with a A-MuLV stock prepared by infection of the ANN-1 cell line with the helper virus from the regressing strain of Friend virus (Hines and Gragowski, 1983). The cell lines were routinely passaged in RPMI 1640 medium (GIBCO, Grand Island, NY) supplemented with 10% heat-inactivated fetal calf serum (FCS, GIBCO, Grand Island, NY), 10% heat-inactivated calf serum (CS, Hyclone Labs, Logan, Utah), 50 pM 2-mercaptoethanol, and 5 Fg/ml gentamycin.…”
