Abelian Higgs model effective potential in the presence of vortices

Abstract: We determine the contribution of nontrivial vacuum (topological) excitations, more specifically vortex-strings of the Abelian Higgs model in 3 + 1 dimensions, to the functional partition function. By expressing the original action in terms of dual transformed fields we make explicit in the equivalent action the contribution of the vortex-strings excitations of the model. The effective potential of an appropriately defined local vacuum expectation value of the vortex-string field in the dual transformed action … Show more

“…Particle-vortex duality is a very useful tool in 2+1 dimensional quantum field theories [1] (see for instance [2][3][4]), though it was still not as used as the particle-monopole, or S-duality, in 3+1 dimensional quantum field theories. The duality goes back to work on superconductivity [5,6] and anyon superconductivity and the fractional quantum Hall effect [7] (see also the early works [8,9]), and was defined at the level of the path integral in [10,11] (see also [12,13] for another take on a path integral formulation).…”

“…Let us summarize the idea of a Higgs mechanism for B µν following [44][45][46][47][48]. For quantized strings we can define a wavefunctional Ψ[Ω] on the space of parametrized loops {Ω = {X µ (σ, τ ) = X µ (σ + 2π, τ )}} which remains invariant under a reparametrization…”

“…In this dual formulation too, the ANO vortex strings are dualized to a string current electrically coupled with the massive 2-form field [17,18]. The dual transformation was applied to a finite temperature phase transition of the Abelian Higgs model [19].…”
