We present the first implementation of the Cho-Faddeev-Niemi decomposition of the SU(2) Yang-Mills field on a lattice. Our construction retains the color symmetry (global SU(2) gauge invariance) even after a new type of Maximally Abelian gauge, as explicitly demonstrated by numerical simulations. Moreover, we propose a gauge-invariant definition of the magnetic monopole current using this formulation and compare the new definition with the conventional one by DeGrand and Toussaint to exhibit its validity.

Propagators of the diagonal and the off-diagonal gluons are studied numerically in the Maximal Abelian gauge of SU(2) lattice gauge theory. It is found that in the infrared region the propagator of the diagonal gluon is strongly enhanced in comparison with the off-diagonal one. The enhancement factor is about 50 at our smallest momentum 325 MeV. We have also applied various fits to the propagator formfactors.

We report on some recent analytical results on the behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators in Euclidean SU(2) Yang-Mills theory quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge (MAG). This gauge is of particular interest for the dual superconductivity picture to explain color confinement. Two kinds of effects are taken into account: those arising from a treatment of Gribov copies in the MAG and those arising from a dynamical mass originating in a dimension two gluon condensate. The diagonal component of the gluon propagator displays the typical Gribov-type behaviour, while the off-diagonal component is of the Yukawa type due to the dynamical mass. These results are in qualitative agreement with available lattice data on the gluon propagators. The off-diagonal ghost propagator exhibits an infrared enhancement due to the Gribov restriction, while the diagonal one remains unaffected.
