Abdominal imaging findings on computed tomography in patients acutely infected with SARS-CoV-2: what are the findings?

Abstract: Objectives To investigate what findings are new on contrast-enhanced abdominopelvic CT in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. Methods Contrast-enhanced CT of the abdomen and pelvis of patients with COVID-19 at a tertiary oncologic center acquired over a 2-month period were reviewed independently by two readers and scored for new imaging abnormalities compared with a prior scan. CT scans were included if the study was performed between − 3 and 45 days from the time of COV… Show more

“…Bowel inflammation, hypomotility, and ischemia are the major reported bowel imaging abnormalities in COVID-19 patients, reported in approximately 30% of patients imaged by computed tomography (CT) including findings of ischemia in 20% of ICU patients [ 1 , 3 , 20 , 28 , 29 ]. Bowel inflammation due to COVID-19 has a similar appearance to other causes of gastritis, enteritis, and colitis, including circumferential mural thickening, hyperenhancement, and surrounding edema and fat stranding ( Fig.…”

“…Pancreatic inflammation associated with COVID-19 has been described with biochemical and imaging abnormalities ( Fig. 6 ) [ 3 , [11] , [12] , [13] , 20 ]. Wang and colleagues [ 12 ] reported abnormalities in amylase or lipase levels indicating pancreatic injury in 17% of inpatients (n = 52) presenting with COVID-19 pneumonia.…”
