“…The plot readily shows the high degree of nucleotide variation within and between genes amongst the aligned Taenia genomes for any given window of 300 bp (π ranges from 0.094 to 0.333), and the possibility that hitherto untested regions of mtDNAs may be of utility. GenBank holds relatively few mitochondrial markers for a few species of Taenia , used variously for population genetics and diagnostics, but include partial fragments of cox 1, cyt b [60,62], nad 1 [63], rrn S and atp 6 (unpublished data available on GenBank). Sliding window analysis (and computation of number of variable positions per unit length of gene), indicates that genes with high sequence variability included nad 6 (0.517), nad 5 (0.517), atp 6 (0.490), nad 3 (0.480) and nad 2 (0.479).…”

“…Altogether, to our knowledge, at least 10 different larval cestode infections have been reported in previous studies to affect members of more than 20 different lemur or monkey species (Table 3) [1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 1113, 17, 22–27, 29, 30, 34–36, 38, 39]. In most of these studies, mortality rates were high, showing that the control of these infections might be of critical importance in maintaining the well-being of NHPs living in parks.…”

“…The T. hydatigena metacestode, commonly known as Cysticercus tenuicollis, uses a wide range of intermediate hosts, including ruminant and monogastric mammals (Abuladze, 1964;Tsubota et al, 2009). This metacestode has veterinary and economic importance due to its hepatic migration, especially in swine (Georgi, 1987;Trees et al, 1985).…”

“…However, cysticerci of T. hydatigena have been found also in kidney, lung, brain, uterus, and others organs (Payan-Carreira et al, 2008;Tsubota et al, 2009). …”
