PurposeManaging inventory continues to be a growing area of concern for many retailers due to the multitude of issues that arise from either an excess or shortage of inventory. This study aims to understand how a large-scale retail chain can improve its handling of excess seasonal inventory using three common strategies: information sharing, visibility, and collaboration.Design/methodology/approachThis study has been designed utilizing a case study method focusing on one retail chain at three key levels: strategic (head office), warehouses, and retail stores. The data have been collected by conducting semi-structured interviews with senior-level employees at each of the three levels and employing a thematic analysis to examine the major themes.FindingsThe results show how three common strategies are being practiced by this retailer and how utilizing these strategies aids the retailer in improving its performance in regard to seasonal inventory. Among our research findings, some challenges were discovered in implementing the strategies, most notably: human errors, advanced forecasting deficiencies, and the handling of return merchandise authorizations.Originality/valueThis research takes a case study approach and focuses on one big-box retailer. The authors chose to study three levels (head office, warehouses, and retail stores) to gain a deeper understanding of the functions and processes of each level, and to understand the working relationships between them. Through the collection of primary data in a Canadian context, this study contributes to the literature by investigating supply chain strategies for managing inventory. The Canadian context is especially interesting due to the multi-cultural demographics of the country.

PT ABC is a start-up company that provides an online shopping platform with a variety of daily necessities, one of products offered is Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG). The main problem faced by PT ABC was the total inventory cost that exceeded the budget by 82%. This was caused by the lack of standard inventory policy calculation. To overcome this problem, a proposed inventory policy needs to be designed to obtain the optimal value of reorder point, order quantity, and safety stock. Before designing the inventory policy, inventory classification was conducted using ABC analysis. Then proceed with designing inventory policy using the continuous review method (r, Q) to minimize total inventory cost. After that, a Decision Support System (DSS) was designed based on the results of the proposed inventory policy using Microsoft Excel-VBA. This research resulted the optimal value of reorder point, order quantity, and safety stock were obtained for 42 products in category A with diverse values. Based on the proposed inventory policy, the total inventory cost decreased by 11% or Rp281.770.103/year from the existing total cost. Then, the DSS was successfully designed to assist decision makers in implementing the proposed inventory policy. Although it had been successfully minimized, the total cost of the proposed inventory still exceeded the budget. This was because the current budget had not considered all components of inventory costs, even the budget for purchasing costs with an order quantity of as much as the number of demands was not sufficient.

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between inventory automation practices (IAP) and the productivity of steel manufacturing firms. The study also explores the mediation effect of knowledge of IAPs on the relationship between IAP and firms' productivity (FP). Study based on data, collected from 287-key officials of three manufacturing firms of Odisha, India using a structured questionnaire. SPSS and Amos software were used for data analysis. Data were processed through the test of validity and reliability and subsequently, structural equation modelling (SEM) was applied to test the hypotheses. The research findings revealed that IAP has a significant positive impact on the productivity of manufacturing firms. It is also found that knowledge of IAP is partially mediating the above relationship. It will add to the existing body of knowledge and further help practitioners to understand the importance and relationships of inventory automation practices in steel manufacturing firms.
