Abattoir survey of bovine kidney disease

Abstract: A survey of the prevalence and type of renal disease was carried out at a Dublin abattoir in 1979-80. Of 4166 cattle surveyed, 173 (4.2 per cent) had kidneys rejected for gross abnormalities. The rejection rate was 7.7, 1.7, 2.2 and 28 per cent for cows, bullocks, heifers and bulls, respectively. The most common reason for rejection was focal interstitial nephritis (60.1 per cent of rejected kidneys). Other lesions included cysts (26.0 per cent), pigmentation (6.4 per cent), pyelonephritis (3.5 per cent), amyl… Show more

“…This finding was closer to 5.77% by Shegaw et al, (2009) in Mekelle and lower than 8.6% reported by Jembere, (2002) at Nazareth abattoir in Ethiopia. However, it was higher from the report of 4.2% by Monaghan and Hannan, (1983). There was statically significant difference (p = 0.037) in condemnation rate of kidneys among the body condition score groups.…”

“…At necropsy, chronic nephritis, fibrosis of the epididymis and sarcosporidiosis were also found. Monaghan and Hannan [18] reported kidney lesions, including focal nephritis, as a common finding in slaughtered bulls. The additional pathologic conditions found in the presented case are most likely not related to MAP infection but could have been secondary to a general weakness and increased susceptibility of the host due to mycobacterial infection [11].…”

“…Focal interstitial nephritis is the most frequently encountered lesion in bovine kidney disease in abattoir surveys. In such cases, the disease is characterized by scattered, macroscopic greyish‐white foci (white‐spotted kidneys) in slaughtered cattle (Monaghan and Hannan, 1983; Skilbeck et al., 1988). The lesions of focal interstitial nephritis in adult cattle have been attributed to infections with Leptospira interrogans (Hadlow and Stoenner, 1955; Burdin, 1963; Amatredjo et al., 1976) based on cultural and/or serological evidence.…”
