Abandoned Mine Galleries Detection using Electrical Resistivity Tomography Method over Jharia Coal Field, India

Abstract: Land subsidence is a serious problem in Indian coalfields due to old underground mine workings. Unfortunately, most of these are uncharted as no mine plans are available. The hidden galleries, goafs, shafts etc. may pose great threat for future mine development as well as to the local environment. The mine workings should be charted to undertake an effective preventive action. In the present study, 2D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) technique has been used to detect underground mine workings, mainly ai… Show more

“…The apparent chargeability (mV/V or ms) is then calculated in order to determine the polarization characteristics of the ground through analysis of the attenuating voltage over a specified time interval (Chouteau, 2006; Geotomo, 2018; Marescot, 2008; Sumner, 2012). IP and ERT are commonly used in geological and mining prospecting to indicate the presence of metal sulphides, metal oxides, clays and other old buried mine sites in the ground (Bharti et al., 2016; Bharti et al., 2019; Claude et al., 2014; Das et al., 2017; Gündoğdu et al., 2022; Horo et al., 2020; Kayode et al., 2022; Moreira et al., 2019; Shirazi et al., 2022; Silva et al., 2022; Singh et al., 2019; Zaid et al., 2022). Other studies use these methods for the 3D modelling of geoelectric anomalies corresponding to the targets sought (Embeng et al., 2022; Kayode et al., 2022; Lenhare & Moreira, 2020; Martin et al., 2020; Moreira et al., 2019; Sağır et al., 2020; Ya‐wei et al., 2015).…”

“…This situation is common to all the mining villages of the Lom series, and the Cameroonian government is struggling to find appropriate solutions to attract investors and make the mineralization of this series profitable in strict compliance with environmental standards. Geophysical tools, such as induced polarization (IP) and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), are important techniques often used in mining projects, particularly for the exploration of metal sulphides such as gold (Bharti et al., 2016; Bharti et al., 2019; Claude et al., 2014; Das et al., 2017; Gouet et al., 2015; Hasan et al., 2021; Horo et al., 2020; Moreira et al., 2019; Singh et al., 2019; Zaid et al., 2022). These tools facilitate the highlighting of favourable mineralization zones in a complex geological and geomorphological environment.…”

“…Based on the mine data, it was inferred that the goaf and collapse area of Zhongxing no. 2 mine are under the electrode of 320-590 m, which is shown in the profile [9][10][11]. Drilling is conducted at the boundary of the collapse area.…”

“…Generally, coal seams occur in the Barakar Formation of Lower Gondwana group of rocks of the Early Permian period. Barakar Formation mostly consists of sandstone of different grain size, intercalation of sandstone and shale, grey and carbonaceous shale and coal seams (Vaish and Pal 2015b;Das et al 2017). The natural topography is harshly affected due to old mining actions, severe underground coal fire activities, land subsidence and overburden dumping.…”
