The Aetiology of Non‐Gonococcal Urethritis

“…Following the demonstration of spirochaetes in the urine of cases of so‐called abacterial pyuria (Coutts and Vargas‐Zalazar, 1946), and noting the association of this condition with a urethritis (Horne, 1950), some workers have considered a spirochaetal cause of non‐gonococcal urethritis based on the finding of spirochaetes similar to those found in the mouth. It has been suggested that the practice of anal or buccal coitus may be responsible.…”

“…It was partly because I have been so impressed by the universality of this confusion that I recently published a review of " abacterial cystitis " (Horne, 1953), in which I drew attention to the inadequacy of the term " abacterial pyuria ". This term tends to be used so indiscriminately that I recommend that it should be discarded as a name for any syndrome.…”
