At present, the Philippines is the top producer of natural fibers globally. This production of abaca and pineapple leaf fiber increased as time passed by. However, applying these fibers is limited and needs further studies to be efficiently utilized. This study introduced the usage of treated Abaca fiber and Pineapple leaf fiber (AFPLF) by incorporating it to cement boards and evaluate the mechanical and physical properties of fiber cement boards (FCB). This study's experimental results showed a significant increase in compression strength in 5% fiber reinforcement, higher than the compression capacity of cement board without fiber. In addition, the physical properties of the cement board reinforced with Abaca fiber and Pineapple leaf fiber (AFPLF) showed good characteristics in terms of drilling, impact, density, and water absorption tests. The cement board reinforced with 5% Abaca fiber and Pineapple leaf fiber (AFPLF) produces the best results regarding the fiber cement board's physical and mechanical aspects.

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness and demand for global sustainability, as well as a mandate for the use of renewable and environmentally sustainable materials and processes. Due to which, massive efforts are being made to develop and nurture the next generation of composite materials that are energy efficient, environmentally friendly, and biodegradable. Light weight, lower coefficient of thermal expansion, and comparable tensile strength exhibited by natural fibers render them the choice for use in several industrial products and applications over the last decade. Natural fibers as the reinforcing entity are pitted against their synthetic variants primarily because of the superior aspects like biodegradability and excellent strength-to-weight ratio. This article presents the review on various nonconventional natural fibers such as tamarind seed and shell, Luffa cylindrica, groundnut shell, coconut coir, papaya bast, okra, and Ashoka tree seed. The flow of the chapter includes the introduction, extraction methodologies, and fabrication, and investigations of mechanical properties, applications, and sustainability are dealt in detail for nontraditional natural fibers. The okra fibers possess greater tensile strength of up to 262.8 MPa in comparison with other fibers, while the Ashoka tree seed fibers are known to possess a maximum flexural strength of up to 125 MPa. Further, these fibers are used as reinforcements in potential applications in interiors and automobile and aircraft panels and wood-based particle board composites owing to the increase in tensile and flexural strengths of composites.

Abaca is a high-strength natural fiber whose tribological behavior in epoxy polymer composite is unexplored to date. This paper aims to study the mechanical and dry sliding wear behavior of abaca fiber (A) and glass fiber (G) reinforced epoxy laminate composites with various stacking sequences. Symmetrically oriented laminate composites were fabricated in different stacking sequences (AAAA, AGAG, AGGA, and GAAG) using hand lay-up technique. Mechanical characterization is carried out as per ASTM standards. It is found that GAAG hybrid composite possesses maximum tensile strength (101.05 MPa). Meanwhile, AGAG composite shows maximum flexural strength (190.15 MPa) and interlaminar shear strength (5.97 MPa). Abrasive wear behavior of the composites is investigated by performing the test on a pin-on-disc tribo tester as per the ASTM G99 standard under dry sliding conditions. Tribological results indicate that hybridization of abaca and glass fiber into an epoxy matrix enhances the wear properties significantly. Maximum wear resistance is observed with AGGA-layered hybrid composite. The reduction in volumetric wear of AGGA composite is found to be lower than neat epoxy by 86.51%. However, the frictional force of AGGA composite increased by 54.17%. Furthermore, the morphology of fractured and worn-out surfaces is studied using a scanning electron microscope. It is inferred that failure is mainly due to the development of micro-cracks on both fiber and matrix, combined with fiber fragmentation, plowing, and debonding.
