Abstract: Background Caspases form an evolutionarily conserved family of cytosolic, aspartate-specific, cysteine proteases. Beyond its role in apoptosis, certain caspases (caspase-1, -4, -5, -11 and -12) exert non-apoptotic functions, including cytokine maturation during innate immunity, cell differentiation, proliferation, and NF-κB activation.
