A β-1,3 Glucan Sulfate Induces Resistance in Grapevine against Plasmopara viticola Through Priming of Defense Responses, Including HR-like Cell Death

Abstract: Sulfated laminarin (PS3) has been shown previously to be an elicitor of plant defense reactions in tobacco and Arabidopsis and to induce protection against tobacco mosaic virus. Here, we have demonstrated the efficiency of PS3 in protecting a susceptible grapevine cultivar (Vitis vinifera cv. Marselan) against downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) under glasshouse conditions. This induced resistance was associated with potentiated H2O2 production at the infection sites, upregulation of defense-related genes, call… Show more

“…Applications of laminarin to grapevine plants reduced infection by Botrytis cinerea Pers (grey mold disease) and P. viticola in leaves by approximately 55 and 85 %. However, the application of inhibitors of LOX gene and callose synthesis reduced the effectiveness of laminarin up to 80 %, suggesting that its effect principally relies on the JA pathway (Trouvelot et al, 2008).…”

“…Although a number of studies describe the biology of the infection process of grapevine by P. viticola (Allegre et al 2007;Kortekamp 2005;Musetti et al 2007;Unger et al 2007;Werner et al 2002) and the characterisation of defence reactions in susceptible and resistant grapevines (Dai et al 1995;Gindro et al 2003;Kortekamp 2006, Kortekamp andZyprian 2003) or their response to inducers of defence reactions (Aziz et al 2003;Hamiduzzaman et al 2005;Trouvelot et al 2008), a large-scale analysis of P. viticola and grapevine interaction has not been reported.…”

“…To our knowledge, causal relationships between ROS and cell death and between cell death and plant defence against pathogens remain an issue with broad importance. In both plants under infection by pathogens (Jabs et al, 1996;Tanaka et al, 2003) or those treated with different elicitors (Desikan et al, 1998;Peng et al, 2003;Peng et al, 2004;Tanaka et al, 2003;Trouvelot et al, 2008), ROS production is either dispensable for the induction of cell death and indispensable for the defence response. This is true for elicitins based on published studies.…”
