A Window into the Classroom: How Teachers Integrate Pronunciation Instruction

Abstract: This project analyzes teacher behavior using a corpus of 110 hours of recorded instruction in order to document the realities of second-language pronunciation instruction. Teachers of six intact classes were recorded during a seven-week oral communication course. Four classes implemented a focus on pronunciation that was integrated into the syllabus in one of two ways: form-focused (only) instruction (‘explicit’), or form-focused and communicative at the same time (‘communicative’). The other two did not have … Show more

“…Second language (L2) pronunciation instruction enhances the development of oral communication skills in L2 learners (Darcy, 2018). Despite the key role of L2 pronunciation in oral communication and the need to implement research-based teaching practices (Derwing & Munro, 2005, 2015), studies of second language teacher cognition (SLTC) of pronunciation teachers remained scarce until the last decade (Baker & Murphy, 2011).…”

“…Another relevant pedagogical implication is that ASR and TTS can facilitate integrating the pronunciation component in all sorts of language courses, as defended by Darcy, Rocca, and Hancock (2021) and Gordon and Darcy (2016). In line with the authors' view, pronunciation gains can be achieved even in short periods of instruction, without the (actual) need to devote a whole course to pronunciation instruction.…”

“…Classrooms provide unique opportunities for L2 pronunciation development, as teachers can introduce meaningful PI into their regular lessons and tailor it to the learners’ proficiency, even at an introductory level (Darcy, 2018; Darcy, Ewert & Lidster, 2012; Zielinski & Yates, 2014). Thus, it is important for teachers at all levels to perceive the usefulness of pronunciation-related knowledge, skills, and activities, and to feel confident in their ability to make use of them.…”
