Abstract-In this paper we present an analysis of the edge effects in wideband connected arrays of slots and dipoles. Due to the strong mutual coupling between the elements, these arrays can support the propagation of guided waves along their surface. Such waves arise from the edges of the finite array and can be especially detrimental for the performance, since they can travel within the array without geometrical spreading. In this work we introduce Green's function based equivalent transmission line models to describe the propagation of the guided waves. The elements' active impedances are represented as periodic loads on these transmission lines. The equivalent models can be used as a simple and convenient tool to control and minimize the edge effects. Finite array simulations of relevant array structures are discussed. The evidence is that the active impedance and the inter-element capacitance can be tuned to attenuate and reflect the edge-born waves.

Ultra-wideband (UWB) electronically scanned arrays (ESA) with high efficiency, excellent polarization agility, and wide-scan matching remain essential for servicing multifunctional RF front-ends and other communications, sensing, and jamming or countermeasure systems. To this day, the most popular antenna array element in modern UWB-ESA systems is the Vivaldi, or flared notch, due to its superior widescan wide impedance bandwidth, well-known design guidelines, and practical embodiment versatility. Despite their popularity, these arrays tend to radiate unacceptably high cross-polarization levels, thus encouraging a great research opportunity.This dissertation presents the theory and design of a new class of UWB-ESAs, termed Sliced Notch Antenna (SNA) arrays, that remedy the high cross-polarization problems in Vivaldi arrays while maintaining their desirable impedance performance.The critical enabling insight of this work lays in revealing the nature of polarization viii purity or cross-polarization ratio (CPR) degradation in Vivaldi arrays to arise from a highly imbalanced ratio of longitudinal and transverse currents within the element.This work introduces a novel design strategy that intrinsically balances these currents over a UWB operating band, achieving decade-order (10:1) bandwidths and low cross-polarization. Moreover, the design approach is simple, intuitive, and can be implemented in a manner that does not inflate cost expenditures. In fact, the proposed topology can facilitate significantly reduced costs and manufacturing times

Abstract-A single-layer partially reflective surface (PRS) structure is presented to design single-feed Fabry-Perot resonator antennas (FPRA) with a large gain bandwidth and compact size. The design of the PRS structure applied in this antenna is based on the theory of tightly coupled antenna arrays. Owing to strong mutual coupling between the overlapped patches, the proposed antenna obtains a wider bandwidth and more compact size. Experimental results show that the antenna obtains a 32% 3-dB gain bandwidth from 8.8 GHz to 12.2 GHz, with a peak gain of 13.5 dBi. Moreover, the relative impendence bandwidth is 40.9% for the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) less than 2 from 8.45 GHz to 12.8 GHz.
