An approach to ultra-wideband channel calibration using a vector network analyser AbstractIn this paper, two calibration methods are investigated to determine the most suitable approach for ultrawideband (UWB) communication channel measurements. The fi rst method is the through, open, short and match (TOSM) calibration technique. The second method is through, refl ection and load calibration technique. Presented experiment results show that the through, refl ection and load calibration process is more precise for calibration of coaxial cables and the UWB channel as clearly seen by increased magnitudes of the channel transfer function. It is also shown that the proposed through, refl ection and load technique leads to an improved larger measured root-mean-square value and that the measured magnitude transfer function of the wireless channel is increased by an absolute value of approximately 5 dB after calibration compared with results achieved when TOSM technique is used. In the paper, it is also shown that the time delay associated with test equipment of the UWB channel measurement can be equally well removed by using either the through, refl ection and load or TOSM calibration techniques. Wireless technologies are an essential communication means that transform a branched localized fixed meshwork into a ubiquitous disconnected network. A clear trend shows that cells are becoming smaller, homogeneously distributed, operating at higher carrier frequencies, and more energy conscious. This points toward wireless picocell systems that implement millimeter-wave (mm-wave) modulation. In this work various techniques are proposed, which are oriented to specific traits of the 60-GHz mm-wave band. Two techniques oriented to solve physical and data-link layer issues are proposed. Single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) is proposed as the technology to be implemented at the physical layer, and a variable slot time multiplexing access technique, called variable slot time-time division multiple access (VST-TDMA), with a conscious energy-conservation protocol, is proposed for the data-link (MAC) layer. SC-FDMA with pulse shaping is implemented to minimize the peak-to-average power ratio of the system, which reduces energy consumption. The multiplexing access technique takes advantage of the reduced cell size by multiplexing data in the time domain, this allows the reduced number of users to utilize the entire available bandwidth. Incorporated into the access protocol is the option of energy pacing or even self-sustainability if an energy harvesting device is present. Self-sustainability can be achieved at the cost off throughput, some techniques are discussed to relieve this trade-off condition. Also, a thorough discussion is included on battery energy depletion, even with an energy harvesting device present, to further increase the through- put performance. Since using SC-FDMA reduces the energy consumption, it enables VST-TDMA to operate at higher speeds under self-sustainability mode. Overall the proposed set of solutions showed independently significant improvements to the system. Abstract-This paper proposes a novel synchronous wideband frequency domain method for measuring time domain response of longdistance channel. Its core consists of: (1) baseband signal generators at the transmission terminal and the reception terminal respectively are used to generate the wideband signal of the same frequency; (2) the two GPS clock frequency reference sources locked on the same satellite are used to yield the high-stability 10 MHz signal as the external reference source of the baseband signal generator so that the initial phases of the wideband signals are basically the same; (3) the pulse per second (PPS) signal generated by the GPS clock frequency reference source is used as trigger signal to ensure that the baseband signal generator and the vector network analyzer (VNA) can transmit and receive signals synchronously; (4) the time domain response of the channel is indirectly obtained through the inverse Fourier transform of amplitude and phase of the frequency domain response. To verify the measurement method, experiments were performed, in which the sea surface evaporation waveguide which is tens of kilometers apart from each other was selected as the channel. The experimental results, given in Figs. 4 and 5, and their analysis show that the measurement method can obtain amplitude and phase of the signal whose band is hundreds of MHz and whose equivalent pulse width reaches 5 ns. The measurement method is used to obtain the time domain response of the long-distance channel, verifying that the measurement method is effective.
