A wideband array antenna with beam‐steering capability using real valued weights

Abstract: This article presents an array antenna with beam‐steering capability in azimuth over a wide frequency band using real‐valued weighting coefficients that can be realized in practice by amplifiers or attenuators. The described beamforming scheme relies on a 2D (instead of 1D) array structure in order to make sure that there are enough degrees of freedom to realize a given radiation pattern in both the angular and frequency domains. In the presented approach, weights are determined using an inverse discrete Fouri… Show more

“…It is due to that at such a location, the objective signal is usually degraded by interference signals coming from different directions and use of a beam‐steering antenna can effectively suppressing such interference. Conventionally, the beam‐steering antennas had been realized by a multielement array which either has a set of directive antennas connected by a switching network or is a phased array with a large number of electronically controlled phase shifters . This is undoubtedly leading them to more complex and expensive for practical application.…”

“…In the part of signal processing, weighting coefficients are calculated using two-dimensional Inverse Discrete Fourier Transform (IDFT) technique applied to the required radiation pattern. The obtained weighting coefficients become real values which can be simply realized by attenuators or amplifiers [11][12][13]. The main advantage of this wideband spatial beamformer is that its design does not require phase shifters, delay circuits, or frequency filters.…”
