A wideband aperture‐coupled microstrip array using backed substrate integrated cavity with T‐shaped geometry

Abstract: A novel 2 × 2 wideband cavity‐backed aperture‐coupled microstrip array is presented in this article. The cavity in the antenna element is designed based on the new substrate integrated cavity technique and has a T‐shaped geometry. It affords a solution to enhance the bandwidth, reduce the back radiation of the aperture, and suppress the parallel plate mode simultaneously. Furthermore, an integrated multilayer architecture of the feeding network is used in the array. The experimental results of the array show th… Show more

“…Port T' is the open circuit termination of the feed-line. The technique of the substrate integrated cavity (SIC) constituted by metallic vias 4 is applied to suppress the parallel plate mode. In addition, its geometry is changed to the non-closed structure, which is drawn with the wider solid lines in Figure 1(C).…”

“…And with the developments in the integration of antennas and T/R modules, the antennas fabricated by PCB techniques with the low-profile property have been attractive. Accordingly, the microstrip patch antennas with the broadband operation are a nice selection in the application of phased array wireless systems, such as stacked patches, 1 notched patch, 2 aperture-coupling, [3][4][5] proximity-coupling, and 6,7 modified probe feeding. 8 In these techniques, the aperturecoupling method has better comprehensive property than the others due to its inverted ground architecture which suppresses the spurious radiations excited by the feeding configuration, such as the influences of the feed-line on the antenna radiations.…”

“…Introduction: Recently, a non-contact coupling feed, such as proximity or aperture coupling, has become a popular way to broaden antenna bandwidth. The proximity coupling is one of the most utilised techniques in microstrip antenna designs [1,2]. Recently, the use of a multiantenna, such as a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna, has become one of the many effective ways to increase the channel capacity of communication systems [3].…”
