A Wheat R2R3-type MYB Transcription Factor TaODORANT1 Positively Regulates Drought and Salt Stress Responses in Transgenic Tobacco Plants

Abstract: MYB transcription factors play important roles in plant responses to biotic and abiotic stress. In this study, TaODORANT1, a R2R3-MYB gene, was cloned from wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). TaODORANT1 was localized in the nucleus and functioned as a transcriptional activator. TaODORANT1 was up-regulated in wheat under PEG6000, NaCl, ABA, and H2O2 treatments. TaODORANT1-overexpressing transgenic tobacco plants exhibited higher relative water content and lower water loss rate under drought stress, as well as lower N… Show more

“…Soil salinization is a serious threat to the environment and agricultural productivity worldwide. Research into salt tolerance and its underlying mechanisms has been carried out in many plant species, such as rice [1,2], melon [3], maize [4], tobacco [5] and tomato [6]. Investigations of plant salt tolerance are crucial for the sustainable development of saline agriculture.…”

“…The MYB transcription factor contains a MYB domain that is highly conserved across all eukaryotes 116 . Numerous studies have suggested that MYB proteins are also involved in regulating plant responses to biotic and abiotic stresses [121][122][123] . Overexpression of TaODORANT1 enhances resistance to drought and salt stress in transgenic plants 123 .…”

“…MYBs presented similar patterns and conserved motifs, suggesting that their conserved features play similar roles in group-specific functions. As part of a myb-bHLH-WD40 complex, they are involved in plant secondary metabolism and responses to abiotic and biological stresses [24,25]. Several R2R3 MYBs were analyzed for their possible involvement in anthocyanin biosynthesis and accumulation, and fructan exohydrolase regulation when subjected to different stress and hormone treatments [26,27].…”
