A wet adhesion strategy via synergistic cation–π and hydrogen bonding interactions of antifouling zwitterions and mussel-inspired binding moieties

Abstract: An orientation-mediated zwitterion–Dopa binding mechanism is established as a promising wet adhesion strategy to design zwitterion–Dopa-mediated adhesive materials.

“…We employed here a total of six molecules as SAMs featuring noncharged ones, e.g., mercaptohexanol (MCH) and OEG; monocharged ones, e.g., AC and SP; zwitterionic ones, e.g., AP and PC (Figure , Table S1). They all contain hydrophilic moieties as their head groups, among which MCH is a traditional SAM employed in E-AB sensors and the other five molecules were prepared according to previous literature studies. We first characterized the surface properties of these SAMs using contact angle and confocal microscopy and then investigated the effect of these SAMs varying in end-group structures on the performance of E-AB sensors, when they are deployed in urine, sweat, and blood samples, respectively.…”

“…Five custom synthesized monolayers, including noncharged oligoethylene glycol (OEG); monocharged ones, e.g., trimethylammonium chloride (AC) and sulfopropylmethacrylate potassium (SP); and zwitterionic ones, e.g., (dimethylammonio)propane sulfonate (AP), were synthesized according to previous literature studies. Tris(2-carboethyl)-phosphine hydrochloride (TCEP) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich; doxorubicin (DOX) and 6-mercapto-1-hexanol (MCH) were purchased from Aladdin; all were used as received. Microcloth (2 and 7/8″) and 1 μm and 0.05 μm alumina powder were obtained from CH Instruments Ins.…”

“…This further confirms that catechol group plays an essential role in the wet tissue adhesion. [26][27][28] In order to demonstrate the importance of tissue adhesion of catechol to high hemostatic efficiency, the catechol group on USO-g-gauze is transformed to lower its tissue adhesiveness. Hence, USOFe-g-gauze and USOQu-g-gauze were fabricated.…”
