The visualization of a computerized tomographic (TC) exam in 3D increases the quality of the medical diagnosis and, consequently, the success probability in the treatment. To obtain a high quality image it is necessary to obtain slices which are close to one another. Motivated towards the goal of reaching an improved balance between quantity of slices and visualization quality, this research work presents a digital inpainting technique of 3D interpolation for CT slices used in the visualization of human body structures. The inpainting is carried out via non-linear partial differential equations (PDE). The PDE's have been used, in the image-processing context to fill in the damaged regions in a digital 2D image. Inspired by this idea, this article proposes an interpolation method for the filling in of the empty regions between the CT slices.To do it, considering the high similarity between two consecutive real slice, the first step of the proposed method is to create the virtual slices. The virtual slices contain all similarity between the intercaleted slices and, when there aren't similarities between real slices, the virtual slices will contain indefinite portions. In the second step of the proposed method, the created virtual slices will be used together with the real slices images, in the reconstruction of the structure in three dimensions, mapped onto the exam. The proposed method is capable of reconstructing the curvatures of the patient's internal structures without using slices that are close to one another. The experiments carried out show the proposed method's efficiency.

Resumo. O uso de equações diferenciais parciais em processamento de imagens tem sido amplamente usado nosúltimos anos. A idéia básicaé a de modificar uma dada imagem inicial u(x, t) via uma equação diferencial parcial e obter os resultados esperados como a solução desta equação. Apresentamos aqui uma descrição dos principais modelos não lineares para suavização, eliminação de ruídos e detecção de bordas em imagens. Abordamos modelos que têm por base os métodos variacionais bem como os de fluxo geométrico. São também abordados os principais aspectos da implementação computacional dos modelos. IntroduçãoO uso de equações diferenciais parciais (EDP) em processamento de imagens tem crescido significativamente nosúltimos anos. A idéia básicaé modificar uma dada imagem, curva ou superfície com uma equação diferencial parcial e obter os resultados esperados como solução desta equação.O uso de filtros discretosé comumente usado em processamento de imagens. A grande vantagem em substituir esse procedimento tradicional pelas EDP,é que passa-se a fazer a análise de imagens em um domínio contínuo. Isto simplifica o formalismo que se torna independente da grade usada na discretização. O entendimento de filtros discretosé então facilitado quando se faz o comprimento de passo, utilizado na malha, tender a zero e reescrevendo o filtro discreto como um operador diferencial parcial. Outra grande vantagemé a possibilidade de se obter "estabilidade e exatidão" no processo numérico, utilizando a extensiva pesquisa em análise numérica e escolhendo algoritmos adequados para resolver equações diferenciais. A teoria de viscosidade em EDP nos fornece a base teórica para aplicar o formalismo matemático necessário. Em outras palavras, o uso de EDP em processamento de imagens, mais especificamente em Segmentação e Eliminação de Ruídos, nos possibilita não somente o uso de bons algoritmos computacionais como também, o uso de importantes resultados teóricos como existência e unicidade de solução.O Processamento de Imagensé dividido em três partes, com três diferentes objetivos, e são elas: 1 celiazb@usu.br

Ultrasound speckle is an interference pattern that reduces the quality of medical ultrasound images and decreases the capability of interpreting the medical information included in these images. Therefore, speckle suppression is vital whenever ultrasound imaging is used. In this research, an efficient adaptive ultrasound image filter is proposed to reduce ultrasound speckle while maintaining the edge cues in the image. In particular, the pixels that correspond to tissue boundaries are identified by computing the edge map of ultrasound image, and the noisy pixels are determined by calculating the image radiation. The proposed filtering method is designed to adaptively apply different window sizes and bandwidths based on the edge map and image radiation. The proposed method is employed to process a set of ultrasound images and the filtering performance is assessed using a set of broadly accepted filtering metrics. These metrics aim to evaluate the filtering performance, including the capability of the filter to preserve the edges and maintain the image quality. The performance of the proposed filtering method is compared with eight existing image filtering methods. The experimental results indicated that the proposed filtering method enables effective edge preservation and retains image quality. These results suggest the potential of the proposed filtering method to achieve effective speckle suppression in ultrasound images.
