a b s t r a c t a r t i c l e i n f oThis paper describes a methodology of OLAP cube navigation to identify interesting surprises by using a skewness based approach. Three different measures of interestingness of navigation rules are proposed. The navigation rules are examined for their interestingness in terms of their expectedness of skewness from neighborhood rules. A novel Axis Shift Theory (AST) to determine interesting navigation paths is presented along with an attribute influence approach for generalization of rules, which measures the interestingness of dimensional attributes and their relative influence on navigation paths. Detailed examples and extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of interestingness of navigation rules.Published by Elsevier B.V.

Road traffic incidents are eliciting growing public concerns due to their devastating social, economical, and environmental impacts. The severity of these random events is particularly alarming in developing countries, where the situation is just worsening. Recently, Incident Management Systems (IMSs) have been proposed as powerful tools to enhance the coordination and management of rescue operations during traffic accidents. However, most of the available commercial IMS solutions are designed for large metropolitan cities and within the contexts of developed nations. This paper explores the issues of appropriateness and customization of IMS solutions in developing countries through an exploratory inquiry consisting of a case study from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The paper also explores the important issues related to managing the organizational changes that an IMS introduces to the operations of the command and control room. This contribution calls for the development of more comprehensive theoretical frameworks that can guide towards the implementation of appropriate IMS solutions in developing countries. Our research highlights the need for developing countries to acquire appropriate IMS solutions that are tailored to the local organizational work context in which these systems will be used. The experience reported herein can also inspire other public safety agencies in developing countries to consider the option of developing customized IMS solutions that best suit their needs.

Lake Débo and Walado Débo, one of the major Sahelian wetlands is located in Inner Delta (Mali). Given the environmental and community interest in this wetland, there is urgent need to share spatial data on natural resources. Most of the covered information is published in (internal) reports with a limited distribution. With the advent of GIS and Internet technologies, the conventional intricacies to get solutions in time and position have been improved. The combination of Web technologies and the power of GIS software enable natural resource managers to analyze GIS data that resides across the Internet. This paper is based on the design and architecture of a Web-based GIS to managing flooded pastures. MapGIS IGS (MapGIS Internet Server) is used to provide a user-friendly GIS front-end for natural resource managers and public users to perform routine GIS functions on geographic data that are distributed across the Internet. Internet based geographical data services involve management spatial data. Geographic Information System (GIS) is an indispensable tool for analyzing and managing spatial data.
