A Wearable Active Antenna for Global Positioning System and Satellite Phone

Abstract: Abstract-A wearable multiband circularly polarized active antenna is presented for use in Global Positioning System and Iridium satellite phone applications. The square patch antenna is constructed using flexible foam and fabric substrates and conductors etched on thin copper-on-polyimide films. The feed substrate integrates a compact low-noise amplifier chip directly underneath the antenna patch. The antenna performance is studied under bending conditions and in the presence of a human body. The active antenn… Show more

“…Later, other, more sophisticated wearable antennas, with improved performance, were proposed for satellite-based communications. In particular, Kaivanto et al [36] A further improvement to this problem is represented by a recent contribution by Dierck et al [37]. The proposed antenna, which enables dual-band operation in GPS and Iridium bands, is additionally equipped with an active circuit, containing a Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) chip, conveniently integrated on the feed plane on the back side of the structure, enhancing the overall performance.…”

“…As all conductive layers are implemented by means of copper patterns on polyimid flex, only the planar-3D full-wave simulator ADS Momentum is used in the design process. More details are found in [7], [9]. An important remaining issue standing in the way of a commercial breakthrough of smart SFIT systems for PRS concerns ensuring sufficient autonomy without the need of heavy batteries and frequent recharging.…”

“…Lemey, F. Declercq While other components miniaturize continuously, the textile antenna's dimensions remain of the order of the wavelength to yield large radiation efficiency in proximity of the human body [1]. Yet, professional garments offer a sufficiently large platform to integrate a textile antenna while active electronic circuitry, such as low-noise amplifier and transceiver, may be directly integrated onto its feed plane [2]. In addition, to extend its autonomy, the system may be powered using energy harvesters [3], [4] by direct integration of solar cells on the antenna patch [5], [6].…”
