A Water Dispersible Nanocomposite of Polyacrylonitrile with Silica via Aqueous Polymerization of Acrylonitrile by K2CrO4–NaAsO2 Redox System

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The aqueous polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by the redox pair, potassium chromate-sodium arsenite produced polyacrylonitrile which was recovered as a coagulum in the medium. A simple procedure was developed for obtaining a stable suspension of polyacrylonitrile-SiO 2 nanocomposite by conducting the polymerization in presence of SiO 2 as a particulate dispersant. SEM analyses revealed distinct morphological features of the polyacrylonitrile-SiO 2 nanocomposite. TEM analyses indicated the part… Show more

“…19 Interestingly, conductivity of the PAN-AB composite increased with increasing weight per centage of AB in the composite (Table III). However, at 3% AB content, the conductivity was increased $10 7 fold compared to that of PAN homopolymer while the value progressively increased by 10 2 fold corresponding to a 10 fold increase in the per cent of AB in the PAN-AB compo- Table I).…”

“…The peak at 550 C did not manifest in the TGA of PAN homopolymer. 19 Probably this peak resulted from the oxidative degradation of various functional groups (-OH, -COOH, >C=O, -CHO, etc.) 10,12,34 known to be present in various types of carbon black.…”

“…Although torque rheometer could not be used to determine the absolute viscosity of the compounds, it makes a good sense to apply a certain rotor speed and to measure the reactionary torque on the rotors. So torque rheometer was an ideal to investigate the rheological properties of polymer [14][15][16][17]. Figure 3 shows the results of the kneading process for different polymer blends.…”

“…A similar observation was made by the present authors [21] in the PAN-AB composite system. Recently they reported [22] that the polymerization of acrylonitrile by K 2 CrO 4 -NaAsO 2 redox system occurred via a free radical pathway according to the following reactions:…”
