A voltammetric study of direct electron transfer to cytochrome c using a very large assembly of carbon microelectrodes

Abstract: A very large assembly of more than 8000 carbon fibre microdisk electrodes was used to study direct electron transfer to cytochrome c. Near steady-state cyclic voltammograms were observed, which exhibited excellent signal-to-noise ratios despite the low concentrations of cytochrome c employed (1-50 microM). The high resolution of the voltammograms allowed the formal potential of the native form of cytochrome c to be determined over a range of solution pH.

“…These advantages of OMC/GC electrode could be mainly attributed to the unique properties of OMC. First, there are plenty of edge plane-like defects and oxygencontaining functional groups on the surface of OMC, which may provide many favorable sites for electron transfer to molecules [17,31,32], resulting in a large, increasing peak current and low oxidation overpotential. The presence of the oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of OMC, e.g., -COOH, -C=O, and -OH, has been confirmed by Zhou et al [16].…”

“…All those facts demonstrate that OMCE has much more favorable electron transfer kinetics than CNTE and GPE as discussed above. The possible explanation may be related to the high density of edge plane defect sites on the ordered mesoporous carbon accessible for the electrolyte [14 -16], which are much more favorable for electron transfer reactions than the basal plane sites [20,30].…”

“…However, the largest assembly of microelectrodes reported consists in more than 8000 carbon fiber microelectrodes wired in parallel embedded in an epoxy resin [74]. Kudera et al use this large RAM electrode for the direct reduction of the metalloprotein ferricytochrome c to ferrocytochrome.…”
