A Visual Environment for Developing Defeasible Rule Bases for the Semantic Web

Abstract: Abstract. Defeasible reasoning is a rule-based approach for efficient reasoning with incomplete and inconsistent information. Such reasoning is useful for many applications in the Semantic Web, such as policies and business rules, agent brokering and negotiation, ontology and knowledge merging, etc., mainly due to interesting features, such as conflicting rules and priorities of rules. However, the RuleML syntax of defeasible logic may appear too complex for many users. Furthermore, the interplay between vario… Show more

“…We also plan to integrate the framework with the VDRDevice by Bassiliades et al (2005) to provide a userfriendly graphical RuleML editor, recommended by the RuleML initiative, and supporting defeasible rule. However, the editor has to be extended to incorporate functionalities to deal with the deontic operators required for the representation of contracts.…”

“…The tool, called dl-RuleViz, can represent defeasible logic rule bases that query and reason about RDF data, taking into account the semantics of RDF Schema ontologies. The software is implemented as part of VDR-DEVICE [2], an environment for modeling and deploying defeasible logic rule bases on top of RDF ontologies. Notice that stratification is solely used for visualization purposes and is indifferent for the underlying defeasible logic inference engine, since rule cycles in defeasible logic (with the presence of strong negation) are treated skeptically and no conclusion is derived.…”
