A Visible–Near‐Infrared Light‐Responsive Host–Guest Pair with Nanomolar Affinity in Water

Abstract: The discovery of stimuli‐responsive high affinity host–guest pairs with potential applications under biologically relevant conditions is a challenging goal. This work reports a high‐affinity 1:1 complex formed between cucurbit[8]uril and a water‐soluble photochromic diarylethene derivative. It was found that, by confining the open isomer within the cavity of the receptor, a redshift in the absorption spectrum and an enhancement of the photocyclization quantum yield from Φ=0.04 to Φ=0.32 were induced. This impr… Show more

“…In the rst step, we set to analyze and compare in detail the different sensing assay formats by taking use of mathematical [8]uril (CB8), the highaffinity unspecific host, and the Alzheimer's drug memantine hydrochloride (Mem), the analyte used in this study. (B) Published 1 : 1 binding fluorescent IDA dyes for CB8: PMI-OH, 39 PMI-Phe, 40 PDI, [41][42][43] DAE 44 and the novel high-affinity dye (MPCP) presented in this work. Their logarithmic binding constants with CB8 in aqueous media and the excitation and emission wavelength maxima of the CB8Idye complex are displayed.…”

“…This technique is recognized to be a powerful tool for the elucidation of cucurbituril-based host-guest systems. [30][31][32][33] Complexes 2:1 and 1:1 are readily seen in the gas phase after spraying an aqueous solution 100 M of 1 and CB7 (1:1 stoichiometry). Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) was used to investigate the stability of the complexes formed betweenCB7 and 1.…”

“…In particular, the host Q[7] (Figure 1) is capable of recognizing methyl viologen to form very stable inclusion complex, of which the aromatic nucleus of the methyl viologen fits tightly inside the hydrophobic cavity of the Q[7] [34–42] . However, the use of host‐guest chemistry has not been well investigated as a constructing procedure for viologen‐derived chromic materials [43–47] …”
