A viscoelastic model of phagosome motion within cells based on cytomagnetometric measurements

Abstract: Cytomagnetometry is a noninvasive method to investigate intracellular movements of organelles such as phagosomes by introducing magnetic particles into cells by phagocytosis, magnetizing them and measuring the field from the cells. To analyze the results of the cell-field measurement, we introduce a model for intracellular phagosome motion and investigate their behavior in terms of the cell field. The model includes an elastic body and two viscosity components which are ascribed to the filamentous structures s… Show more

“…This phenomenon, called relaxation, is attributed to rotation (misalignment) of particle-containing phagosomes and phagolysosomes [8,18,19] as well as phagosomal transport along microfilaments and microtubules [20,21]. The latter report also confirms that relaxation requires an intact cytoskeleton and active ATP production.…”

“…the phagosomes and to induce rotational random kicks to the phagosome [33,39,51,52]. A hydrodynamic relaxation model was developed under the assumption that the intracellular randomization energy E r behaves like thermal energy kT, implying a rotational Brownian motion process together with an exponential decay in a Newtonian viscosity.…”

“…The first model in [1] consisted of E r and apparent viscosity η. Viscoelastic components were added to the model and the behavior of the model was examined in detail in [10]. Experimental data were treated with the viscoelastic model but in a somewhat simpler way in [11].…”
